Jim was born June 21, 1941 to Emmet Preston and Florence Ward. He attended WaltonVerona High School and graduated during May 1959. After high school he worked for 8 years as a Grand Casemaker at the D. H. Baldwin Piano Company.
Jim joined the Cincinnati Police Division as a Police Recruit on March 12, 1967. He was promoted to Patrolman on June 4, 1967 and assigned to District 3 (Warsaw). Five years later, during 1972 he transferred to District 1 (Lincoln Park Drive). He returned to District 3 during 1979 and rode a 3-wheeled motorcycle. Eight years later, he transferred back to District 1 where he rode a motorcycle and walked Fountain Square and the Skywalk. His supervisors said he was essential during the World Figure Skating Championships and Cincinnati’s Bicentennial. Officer Ward was involved in an auto accident on during June 1988. He returned to work, but retired with a disability on July 6, 1991 with 24 years of service and 33 letters of appreciation and/or commendation.
Officer Ward battled Crohn’s Disease for many years, suffering numerous trips to and surgeries at hospitals. Each time he would maintain a sense of humor that he was known for through his career. By May 22, 2016 he was in the Intensive Care Unit at Mercy West Hospital without much hope of survival – but he did and was at Price Hill Chili that Saturday enjoying breakfast with a gather of retired cops. He was taken back to the ICU on September 27, 2016 with an unknown problem with his blood. By the next day, his kidneys shut down. He had no miracles left him and lost his battle about 2:40 p.m. on September 29, 2016, surrounded by family at Mercy West Hospital. He was 75.

Officer Ward and his families - personal and law enforcement - are in our thoughts and prayers. His humor was legendary and never dissipated in 75 years.
