David Zyp

David Zyp of Delhi Hills, Cincinnati, Ohio, died April 14, 2018 at home with family by his side. He was 71 years old. He is survived by his wife Pat, daughter Victoria, sister Betty, goddaughter Katie, and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

David was born to John and Margaret Zyp in Cleveland, Ohio into a sailing family. His father worked for US Steel, as did his uncle Ace and brother Jerry. As a young man David spent summers working on iron ore carriers as a deck hand then wheelsman, sailing on ships throughout the Great Lakes, providing him great satisfaction and memories for a lifetime.

David graduated high school from the Kentucky Military Institute in Lyndon, Kentucky where he developed an enjoyment of target shooting and lifelong appreciation of historic firearms. From KMI David enrolled in Georgetown College, where he met Pat, his wife of 50 years, and lifelong friends Jack and Meier Bauer. After marrying Pat, Dave moved with her to Owensboro where he completed his undergraduate degree at Kentucky Wesleyan College and developed an appreciation for Moonlite bar-b-q. Soon after the couple moved to Cincinnati and settled in Delhi.

In the mid-70s when Jack came over with his new MGTD, Pat said to David “I’d like one of those.” Within two days Dave had found a 1952 red MG to buy in Peoria, Illinois, and set off the next weekend with Jack. Thus commenced a decades-long passion for historic MGs that led the family on many adventures and to develop wonderful friends. Dave developed a business focused on repairing the antique cars and reveled in providing advice on MG repair to enthusiasts looking to restore and drive their cars. In 1986 David drove his MGTD on the Ocean-to-Ocean, a three-week car marathon taking the cars from New Jersey to California and back to Toronto, and involving long days of driving and long nights of repairing the cars in the group. His involvement with the MG T registers provided a continuing source of fun and comradery with fellow car enthusiasts.

David was also an active member of the Delhi community. When Victoria was in elementary school at C.O.Harrison he volunteered as a “room mother” and delighted children by dressing up for various holiday parties and events. He played the ship captain in a musical production at the school, and continued to reprise the role several times even after Victoria had moved on to junior high. He also enjoyed being an active member of the Shiloh Methodist Church community, volunteering as a Santa Claus representative at the pre-school and cooking in grand style for the youth group in their annual camping trip at Icthus.

David was a passionate cook and even up to his last days enjoyed researching and modifying recipes to best feed those he loved. He was also a passionate traveler and in addition to his travels in the MGs, enjoyed trips to the Pacific Northwest to visit his sister and her family who settled there.

A memorial service will be held June 2, 1pm at Shiloh United Methodist Church, 5261 Foley Rd, Cincinnati, 45238. Donations in memorium can be made to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (phassociation.org).
