Patricia Ann Dumont
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Patricia Ann Dumont (Cincinnati, Ohio), who passed away on August 1, 2020, at the age of 89. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky during the Great Depression and Second World War, ‘Patsy’ Thomas emerged a person of great determination, a lover of nature, and above all, a passionate believer in education. After having raised four children who spanned sixteen years in age – Stephen, Deborah, Aimee, and Scot – she herself returned to complete her degree in education at Xavier University in Cincinnati. Thus began her twenty-year teaching career in the primary school of Summit Country Day. Her highly creative methods and tireless devotion in the classroom earned her the lasting devotion of her students, who remained in contact with her even into the final years of her life. She passed her passion on to her children, three of whom became educators.
She loved nature, learning how to garden from her maternal ‘Aunt Sis’ and ‘Uncle Al’ and, as a young girl, practiced the difficult art of fly fishing in the early morning with her father. Thoughout her adult life she kept pets, being both a cat and dog person. Her adventuresome self took her family to Europe for a year, enrolling the children in Roman schools and then travelling the continent to Athens, Paris, Amsterdam, London, and Innsbruck. It was an education neither she nor they ever forgot. In her retirement, she devoted herself to her grandchildren and, just a week before her death, became a great-grandmother for the first time with the birth of Welles.
Patricia was the daughter of the late John Pendleton Thomas and Rose Thomas (Wirth) and sister of the late John “Uncle Jack” Patrick Thomas. She was predeceased by her husbands Joseph W. Petzold (1959) and Richard E. Dumont (2016). She is survived by her four children: Stephen D. Dumont of South Bend, IN and his wife Carrie Dumont; Deborah A. Dumont of Orient, Long Island, NY, widow of Jan Moor-Jankowski; Aimee M. Murray of Cincinnati, OH; and Scot T. Dumont of Wyoming, OH and his wife Kjeryn Gray Dumont. Patricia is also survived by her sister-in-law, DeeAnn Watson Thomas, widow of John Patrick Thomas. Patricia was affectionately known as ‘Zsa Zsa’ to her four grandchildren Sarah H. Melikian, spouse of Nathan McCray, Spencer S. Ellmaker, Lily V. Dumont, Nicholas G. Dumont and one great grandson Welles S. McCray.
There will be a private Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, August 7, in The Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel of The Summit Country Day School. Burial will be Friday, August 8 at Calvary Cemetery in Louisville, KY. In lieu of flowers Memorials may be sent to The Passionist Nuns, Monastery of the Sacred Passion, 1151 Donaldson Highway, Erlanger, KY 41018.
