A close friend and fellow Evans Scholar wrote this about Tom:
“”
It is with incredible sadness that I have to advise you that longtime WGA Director Tom Binzer has passed away. Tom fought valiantly in his battle with cancer and was surrounded by his wife Janis, his son Zach and daughter-in-law Katie. Tom’s mantra through his battle was “listen to the doctors and put the rest in God’s hands”. The family found a great deal of peace in that approach and I hope all of you do too.
Words have a tough time describing Tom Binzer. He was one of the most faith-driven, generous, kind men I have ever met. I am only one of hundreds if not thousands of people who would say the same thing based on the number of friends, co-workers, and customers that have been following his journey and recently attending church with him on Wednesday mornings. His heart had no boundaries for his family and friends and his community. He was the patriarch of every Evans Scholar that has ever gone through Miami University. He gave his time, his treasures, and talents back to the Evans Scholars Foundation nationally, but his legend also resides at LaSalle HS, The American Heart Association, Corryville Catholic and so many other things that people will only now learn about. And as the class act that he was – he did so without acknowledgement.
He was so loved and it was so deserved.
My life is so much better for knowing and being mentored by Tom. God bless him and his family!
“”
In addition, Tom loved being at his weekend sanctuary, the tree farm on the Ohio river. Sharing the beauty of nature and a boat ride or two with all who came to visit. Tom was an instigator, but in a kind and fun-loving way. He was known for his wit and great sense of humor. He enjoyed being active and loved taking long walks, especially when pushing his grandkids in a stroller. He sought out fun with his grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and always tried to engage with them in whatever activity they wanted. Tom was an avid golfer and played as often as he could, taking a caddie whenever possible. He enjoyed many Reds and Bengal games throughout the years, but we really think it was the tailgating and comradery with friends that he enjoyed most.
Beyond family, friends, and the Evans Scholars, Tom was dedicated to his craft in the insurance industry. Over his career of 40 years, Tom served countless clients and coworkers. Many of these professional relationships turned into personal ones; relationships that became as strong as family. He led and mentored, supported and listened, and in turn made those around him better. His focus was not on individual success, but the success of those around him and the company at large.
Throughout his life, a favorite quote of Tom's was
"Ask not how did he die, but how did he live;
not what he did he gain, but what did he give".
Tom lived his life in the service of God and those around him; giving all he could. Loving his family and friends as deeply as he could. In return, we fully believe he has gained his reward in Heaven. We will miss you Tom “Binnie” Binzer. We love you and will hold you in our hearts until we meet again.
